Abstract Within the research field of regional tourism development, core-periphery structure is a significant explanatory model of the spatial structure and variation of regional tourism. Starting with complex system and fractal theory, this article re-explores the features, dynamic process and measurement of the evolution of the core-periphery spatial structure of regional tourism. In this article, the authors takes the Guanzhong-Tianshui Economic Zone as a typical example, thoroughly analyzed it and reaches three conclusions: first, the core-periphery structure of regional tourism is bearing three characteristics; and the core city exercise influence over the development of the tourism of the periphery cities by the joint force of spatial concentration and spatial diffusion. The factors of core area and periphery area are interactive, promoting the evolution of spatial structure from low rank to high rank, from disorder to order. What's more, in terms of research methods, the evolution of tourism spatial structure, to be more specific, the tourism concentration force and the tourism diffusion effect of the core city in the core-periphery area, can be well revealed by the tourism primacy ratio and tourism primacy index; by applying fractal dimension index, the data achieved can well reflect the intensity of the spatial joint force of tourism between cities and forecast the trend of the future evolution. Third, the Guanzhong-Tianshui Economic Zone features the typical core-periphery tourism spatial structure; in this spatial structure, as the main city, Xi'an plays a prominent role. Furthermore, this spatial structure has stepped into the later stage of the concentration and polarization of the core; though the spatial joint forces of the tourism of the city are mainly working on concentration, its radial force is increasing and its diffusion spillover effect is gradually appearing; the subordinate core cities of Baoji, Xianyang, Weinan, Hanzhong and Yan'an have basically formed and the development of tourism in border areas has been accelerated.
